For about 1.3 billion tones of food is lost or wasted each year but the simple action of the food retailers and the customers can help shape a sustainable future. This campaign was carried out by the UN Environment Programme(UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and partners. For about US$1 trillion get lost or wasted in the consumption and production system. Most of the food lost is at the stage of harvesting, processing and distributon and the waste of food take place at the retailer and the consumer end of the food supply chain. The California and State food and Agriculture Board gave an advice to the Secratery of Agriculture and the Governor on the matter of food. They made creative programs which had innovative ways to capture more of the surplus fresh vegetables and fruits and get to the people on right time. The other idea was taking closer look at the impact of grading standard. It is the standard that delineate a top grade apple from the lower grade which help in eliminating millions of pounds of misshapen produce from sale.

At Grinnell Heritage Farm there was a crate which had waste from the packing shed that will be composed. Most of it was rotten and damaged. This is what is seem in almost all the farms in US. This farm use ample labour,technology and harvesting tool and refrigeration to ensure the produce make it to the market. The food which is not sold is eaten by crew or given to food banks. Food waste at the level of consumer in the industrialized countries is almost as high as the total net food production in the sub Saharan Africa. Lesser the food is lost more the people will have to eat.
